All Weather Wicker

Unlike traditional wicker, which will rot or become brittle with time and exposure, all-weather wicker can withstand more exposure to the elements. Traditional wicker is created by weaving stick or pole rattan. These materials are not resistant to weather. All weather wicker uses the same techniques, but with polyethylene resin fiber, which is water-resistant. All weather wicker is by definition synthetic and is not made of natural materials.

Hassocks

Like a footstool or ottoman, hassocks serve as footrests or small seats. Wicker hassocks are the perfect addition to any dining or living room set. The function of a hassock is to create a comfortable padded place to prop up the feet. Wicker hassocks can be purchased separately from other furniture groupings.

Wicker Sofa

If you can only buy one item for your new home, buy a wicker sofa! A perfect addition to a porch or den, the wicker sofa is the ultimate in country chic. Natural wicker or synthetic materials can be used to make wicker sofas.

Contemporary Wicker Furniture

The history of wicker furniture began in the exotic Egyptian empire of 3000 BC. In those days, wicker and swamp grasses were the materials used to make elaborate chairs and lounges. Wicker and wicker furniture items created in Egypt traveled throughout the world and eventually became popular in Rome. Appreciating the style of wicker and woven baskets, Roman emperors began utilizing the style.

The first wicker furniture items came to the New World on the Mayflower. However, it did not experience widespread popularity in America until the mid-nineteenth century. In the 1850s, rattan was brought to America from the East. The material became quite popular, and contemporary wicker furniture soon caught on once again.

Contemporary wicker furniture came back in the 1960s and 70s, when American furniture designers resurrected the style. The wicker renaissance has grown significantly in recent years. Contemporary wicker furniture is now a common sight on American porches, patios and decks.
